Attachment Parenting Sites
What is attachment parenting?
It is a style of parenting that puts the child's needs first and respects
the child. It usually includes extended
breastfeeding, sharing sleep (or family-bed),
baby-wearing, limited time spent away from baby if any, gentle discipline
(no spanking, etc. - see "20 Alternatives
to Punishment" by Aletha Solter, PhD.), and child-led weaning.
It is best explained by Dr.
Sears, who coined the phrase "attachment parenting". For me,
I believe you can be an attached parent by striving to achieve all of these
things but it is not necessary to do all... (such as in the situation where
a single mother must work out of the home to support her family or a woman
is unable to breastfeed despite her best efforts, etc.) All
families are different and the children's needs can differ as well, putting
them first as well as respecting their needs, etc. is what defines this
style of parenting.
I came across this poem one
day and thought is depicted attachment parenting very well! It is
by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton and first appeared in Ladies Home Journal, October,
1958 (thanks Zan for giving me that info!)
Mother, oh mother, come shake out your cloth!
empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
hang out the washing and butter the bread,
sew on a button and make up a bed.
where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
she's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking!
Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy
Blue
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo)
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek a boo)
The shopping's not done and there's nothing
for stew
and out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my roo
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful
hue?
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo)
Oh, cleaning and scrubbing will wait till
tomorrow,
but children grow up, as I've learned to
my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs. Dust, go to
sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.
