Key players in the sector

• The present government has established the Science and Innovation Advisory Council (SIAC) which will report to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Research, Science and Technology.
• The present government has established the Tertiary Education Advisory Council (TEAC) which will give advice to the Associate Minister of Education (Tertiary) on strategic planning for the tertiary sector.
• The Ministry of Research, Science and Technology is responsible for policy advice in these areas. Some of this is listed under Strategies and Policy. The recent Foresight Project will influence future policy.
• The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology is responsible for paying out most of the public investment in research, science and technology. Among its many programmes is the TADS scheme - see our critique).
• Among other things, the Royal Society of New Zealand administers some RS&T funding schemes, in particular the Marsden Fund for basic research.
